WAITING FOR THE BUS

  • Be on time for the bus. Arrive at the stop at least five minutes, but not more than ten minutes before the bus is scheduled to stop.
  • Do not allow pets or younger children who are not yet attending school accompany you to the bus stop.
  • Observe all safety precautions while waiting for bus. Do not play in the road.
  • If possible, avoid crossing streets.
  • Whenever you must cross a street, look both ways and cross only if you are sure that no moving vehicles are approaching from either direction.
  • Do not push, pull or chase any other pupil.
  • Avoid trespassing on private property and being noisy.
  • As your bus approaches, line up at least fifteen feet off the highway and do not approach the bus until it has stopped and the driver has opened the door and signaled you to approach the bus. Again, avoid pushing others.
  • If you cross the road to the bus from your bus stop, observe these precautions: -Wait for the driver’s signal to cross. -Cross far enough in front of the bus so the driver can see you (at least ten feet.) -If the driver sounds the danger signal (the bus horn) return to the shoulder of the road and wait again for the driver’s signal to cross.

LOADING THE BUS

  • Get on your bus quickly and be seated at once.
  • Listen carefully and obey any directions issued by the driver.
  • Sit in seat assigned by driver.

RIDING THE BUS

  • Do not eat food on the bus.
  • Do not throw anything on the bus.
  • Avoid extending your arms or any other parts of your body out the windows.
  • Do not change seats while the bus is moving.
  • Avoid shouting and other excessive noise that may distract the driver and lead to a serious accident.
  • Help keep the bus clean and sanitary.
  • Be courteous to other pupils.
  • Listen carefully and obey directions issued by the driver.
  • After boarding the bus in the morning, remain on the bus until arrival at school.
  • Pupils transported in a school bus are under the authority of and directly responsible to the driver of the bus.
  • Students will be allowed to disembark from the bus in the afternoon at other than the authorized bus stop only upon written authorization.
  • Continued disorderly conduct or persistent refusal to submit to the authority of the driver is sufficient reason for a pupil to be denied transportation on a school bus.
  • The driver of any school bus is responsible for the orderly conduct of the pupils transported.
  • A school bus cannot be put in motion until all pupils are seated.
  • No school bus can stop to load or discharge pupils except at stops regularly designated by the school committee.
  • No pupil can engage in unnecessary conversation with the driver while bus is in motion.
  • Smoking in a school bus is prohibited.
  • No intoxicating liquor can be transported at any time in a school bus.
  • Students will not attempt to bring any items such as large musical instruments, school projects or sports equipment on the bus which cannot be safely held in the student’s lap.
  • No weapons of any sort, except sidearm carried by authorized police officers, can be transported on a school bus.
  • No person will be allowed to occupy a position in a school bus that interferes with the vision of the driver to the front, to either side of him or through the mirror to the rear or with the operation of the bus.
  • Nothing can be thrown within the bus or out the windows.

UNLOADING THE BUS

  • Do not leave your seat until the bus has come to a complete stop and the driver has opened the door.
  • Obey any directions issued by the driver.
  • Leave the bus quickly but in a courteous manner without pushing other pupils. Move 15 feet away from the bus to depart before traveling home.

If you must cross a street as you leave the school bus observe these precautions:

-Walk in front of the bus (never behind) along the shoulder of the road until you can see the driver (at least ten feet). If you get too close to the front of the bus, the driver will not be able to see you and a serious accident could occur.
-Wait for the driver’s signal to cross. Stop midway across the road and check for traffic yourself.
-If clear, move across the road to your destination.
-If the driver sounds the danger signal (the horn), return to the bus side of the road. Begin procedure again.

Again, be sure to observe all safety precautions as you travel from your bus stop to your home. Violation of the bus rules may result in loss of bus privileges. All pupils must behave appropriately as passengers of a school bus. Clearly understood and enforced rules are necessary for the successful management of pupils who ride school buses.
